The farthest distance of Samosir Island to outer side of Toba Lake is in north part of Toba Lake. This north area is the largest part of Toba Lake. It is estimated that the deepest point of Toba Lake is around this north area. The farthest distance is about 24,28 kilometers length from northern part of Samosir Island to Karo Regency shoreline. to west outer side shoreline of Toba Lake. The shortest distance is about 200 meters length in
Pangururan District in Samosir Regency, in west area of Toba Lake. This shortest distance show that
a canal divided the Samosir Island with the outer shoreline in Samosir
Regency. This canal have been existed years ago.
When I was a kid, this canal was covered by plants Eichhornia crassipes or Eceng Gondok in Bahasa Indonesia. The massive growth of Eceng Gondok causing the canal can be crossed by walk on the Eceng Gondok. But now, the local government has managed to clean the canal from Eceng Gondok, allowing speed boats or small size vessels can sail through it. Sumatra Island mainland connected to Samosir Island by a bridge above the canal. The canal is connecting the north area to south area in west part of Toba Lake.
